The Spanish club announced the transaction just before the summer transfer window closed on Friday.
If he stays in Spain for a time, United will pay him the majority of his £75,000-per-week wage. There are no loan fees.
In a statement, the club added, “The move gives Greenwood a chance to start over with his career away from Manchester United.”
“The club will still help Mason and his family even though things are changing.”
United had already stated that Greenwood and the club “mutually agreed” to split up after learning why he was being kept.
In October of last year, he went to jail. In February, all accusations against him were dismissed.
Greenwood’s contract can be extended for another year if the club wishes. He has another two years to go.
The club would have had to spend more than £8 million to get rid of him.
Greenwood’s uniform number and £75,000-per-week pay became public when more details regarding his move to Getafe emerged.
