At CinemaCon 2024, it was announced that the sequel to ‘Moana’ will feature the voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson once again. Johnson, who plays the demigod Maui, expressed how the role has been a transformative experience for him. He teased that the sequel will have all-new songs and playfully quoted the first movie by saying, “You’re welcome!” Johnson was awarded the Spirit of the Industry Prize and presented a first-look sequence of ‘Moana 2’ footage to the CinemaCon audience.
In the sequel, Moana returns to her vibrant island home of Motunui. Auli’i Cravalho’s voice can be heard singing a new song about embracing their true selves. However, a mysterious new adventure awaits as the ocean starts calling Moana back. The film will explore the theme of personal identity and the power of choice. The sequel, directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and featuring music by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, takes Moana on a journey beyond the shores of Motunui with Maui and a new crew of unlikely seafarers.
Aside from the sequel, a live-action remake of the original ‘Moana’ is also in the works, further expanding on Disney’s fictitious version of Polynesia.
