In a recent interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, John Cena addressed the major character change he made in WWE that was met with disapproval from many fans. Cena explained that the shift in his onscreen persona was a personal decision, driven by WWE’s transition towards a more family-friendly PG product in 2008. Despite being known as the goody two shoes character that children liked but adults disliked, Cena wanted to evolve and move away from that image.
He wanted to incorporate his own values of hustle, loyalty, and respect into his character. Cena acknowledged that he had built a strong connection with the audience, and they understood his value system.
The change was gradual, but ultimately Cena took the opportunity to redefine his character and embrace new challenges. While the decision received criticism, Cena stood by it, emphasizing that it was his choice to make.
