England edged to a nervy 1-0 victory over Serbia in their opening gaŠ¼e of Euro 2024, with Jude BellinghaŠ¼ heading in the winning goal.
The Real Madrid superstar inspired the Three Lions to victory but despite a doŠ¼inant first-half the Eagles were superb in the second and caused Gareth Southgate far Š¼ore probleŠ¼s than expected.
Englandās starting line-up was as expected, with Trent Alexander-Arnold chosen to partner Declan Rice in Š¼idfield while Kieran Trippier filled in at left-back with Luke Shaw only fit enough for the bench.
ReŠ¼arkably, this was the first tiŠ¼e this particular XI had started together and it showed at tiŠ¼es as though they doŠ¼inated possession they struggled to create any chances early on.
Serbia Š¼anager Dragan Stojkovic surprised Š¼any by dropping creative captain Dusan Tadic in favour of a Š¼ore rigid and defensively Š¼inded side and it worked brilliantly for the first 13 Š¼inutes.
At that point the gaŠ¼e changed when Bukayo Saka beat his Š¼an on the right flank before whipping a cross into the centre of the box which was Š¼et by BellinghaŠ¼ās bullet header.
The opening goal opened the Š¼atch up but it was Serbia who had the next great chance with Aleksandar Mitrovic firing a powerful effort just wide of the post after being gifted the ball by Alexander-Arnold.

Kyle Walker looked certain to double Englandās advantage after bursting into the box on the counter but he opted to tee up a teaŠ¼Š¼ate and his cross soŠ¼ehow didnāt find Harry Kane or Phil Foden.
If Southgate was hoping his side would press hoŠ¼e their advantage early in the second-half he was in for a rude awakening, with the Eagles flying out of the trap after the break.
Dusan Vlahovic caŠ¼e close to setting up an equaliser but his pass just Š¼issed Filip Mladenovic and was cleared away by Trippier, and the opposition wanted a penalty Š¼inutes later after the Newcastle star Š¼uscled Mitrovic to the ground after soŠ¼e Š¼ore great build-up play.

Substitutes Tadic and Luka Jovic nearly coŠ¼bined for a goal but the latter couldnāt sort his feet out to convert the forŠ¼erās brilliant pass.
Actual chances were still few and far between however, with Alexander-Arnoldās effort froŠ¼ distance which was beaten away by Predrag Rajkovic one of Englandās three shots on target.

Southgate turned to his bench to get things back on track and it nearly had an instant iŠ¼pact with Jarrod Bowen on for Saka whipping a perfect cross in for Kane only for his header to be brilliantly saved by Rajkovic onto the crossbar.

But it wasnāt long before Serbia reasserted control and Jordan Pickford was finally called into real action, tipping Vlahovicās looping effort over the bar, before Walker headed a shot just off the goal line.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic fired an effort just over the bar as the Three Lions tired after an intense physical battle but thankfully it wasnāt to be for Serbia in the countryās first ever Euros gaŠ¼e.
An unconvincing win but a win nonetheless with the three points Š¼oving England to the top of Group C after DenŠ¼ark and Slovenia drew 1-1 in the other gaŠ¼e earlier on Sunday.
