Serena Williams wasted no time celebrating her record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title in the open era. She sported a new pair of red-and-black Nike trainers with the number 23 etched into the side as she enjoyed the post-match celebrations.
The 35-year-old defeated her sister Venus in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, reclaiming her position as the world No. 1 in women’s tennis. This victory not only surpassed Steffi Graf’s record but also made Serena the greatest Major winner of the open era.
While she now holds the open era record, Serena still trails Margaret Court, who holds the overall record with 24 Grand Slam titles. Serena equaled Graf’s record after defeating Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final last summer. With her impressive track record of reaching at least the semi-finals in the last 10 Grand Slam tournaments, Serena stands a strong chance of surpassing Court’s record.
After securing her victory in Melbourne, Serena graciously acknowledged her sister Venus, crediting her for inspiring and pushing her to excel: “I want to congratulate Venus, she is an amazing person and there’s no way I would be at 23 (Grand Slams) without her, there’s no way I would be at one. Thanks for inspiring me and making me the best player I can be. She has made an incredible comeback. This was a tough one and I just kept praying.”
